Chartwell's 2016 Intern Day

As part of Chartwell’s ongoing educational outreach program, we hosted our inaugural Intern Day on Friday, June 3, 2016.  Ten students from five different colleges and universities gathered in our Minneapolis office to learn more about Chartwell and career options in finance.

Managing Director Chris Staloch kicked off the day with an introduction to Chartwell, providing an overview of our 20-year history and the services we provide.  Our HR representative Peggy Tanzer outlined the typical career progression of an analyst and emphasized the importance of soft skills (such as a positive attitude, effective time management, and good communication skills) for a career in finance.

Two of Chartwell’s associates, Collin Mayer and Matt Ewing, provided an introduction to Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) and an example of a typical value review presentation, which led to many great questions from the students.

Following the presentations, the students met with a number of Chartwell analysts for interactive breakout lunch sessions.  Students found the Q&A opportunities provided by these smaller groups to be the most valuable portion of the day, as the sessions fostered candid, in-depth conversations among participants.

One student from Carlson School of Management said, “This was a great opportunity to learn about real careers in finance, as well as what skills recruiters are looking for.  This experience gave me a perspective on what I should focus on in school and the skills I should develop going forward.”  Another student said, “I found this to be an extremely valuable experience for planning my future.”

The students who attended the event are finance majors currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management; Creighton University, Heider College of Business; Concordia University, Saint Paul; University of St. Thomas; and the College of Saint Benedict.

Chartwell is proud to support the career development of the next generation of professionals and honored to have the opportunity to market our firm to the best in undergraduate talent for future employment.
